Some Pine Trees germinated about the time that human beings invented writing. These trees, out on their parched hills, were already impressively old when Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt, or indeed when Abraham was born. So it is that some trees alive today have seen the rise and fall of entire empires and civilizations.
